The Holomicrobiome Initiative aims to establish the Holomicrobiome Institute, a public/private microbiome research institute with a groundbreaking, cross-domain focus: the interactions between the many microbiomes in humans, animals, plants, soil and water that together make up the holomicrobiome of the Dutch food system. That holomicrobiome extends all the way from fields, wastewater and crops to farm animals, food, consumers and patients.

The Holomicrobiome Institute will become a relatively small spider in a much larger web of knowledge institutions, knowledge organizations and innovative companies that are involved in microbiome research in the Netherlands.

Today, they typically operate within largely separate domains. The new Institute brings all players together under one umbrella and focuses their joint efforts across those domains on the holomicrobiome of the Dutch food system and applications that flow from that approach.
